Run in "Borderless" windowed mode (selectable in-game, video settings).
In the in-game options, under "privacy settings" at the bottom, turn off the sending of information to Rebellion (causes occasional infrequent crashes).

That said, it sounds more like you have a corrupt install, ran out of space on one of your disks, or need to install the correct obsolete version of C++ runtime (should've installed automatically). Try the Steam verify files feature. The first two settings above may be set in the starting splash screen popup.
